IYX AFRICA'S
SAN OSTRICH EGGSHELL BEADS
Creator: Tsumkwe Community and Q7 Beckett
Source: Namibia
Product: Ostrich Eggshell Beaded Jewellery
Price: Various
Tsumkwe Namibia, a place where time seems to stand still, where life moves with the rhythms and flows of nature. The endless expanse of golden sands, dotted with resilient flora and fauna, holds a deep, ancient wisdom. This land is home to some of the last of the San clans, the South African Natives. These people hold the teachings of our ancestry in their ancient way of life, deeply immersed and one with the cycles of nature.
Unfortunately, this way of life seems not to be immortal, with the development of modern times almost entirely wiping it out. Much like the passionate endeavours to save the endangered black rhino, this way of life, endangered almost to extinction, is in deep need of protection. Fortunately with the help of the most devoted advocate, affectionately known as Modern
Bushman Q7, an extraordinary project was set in motion.
IYX AFRICA IYX Africa is a registered non-profit organization that offers remote assistance to Indigenous communities in remote and rural areas of Southern Africa. Its primary focus is to teach youth sustainable development, how to naturally grow food, natural wellness and how to utilize their culture to produce a livelihood. IYX Africa believes in spreading indigenous knowledge as a means to empower indigenous and non-indigenous communities.
Recently Q7 embarked on a mission with members of the community to share their unique wisdom and craftsmanship with the world. Two amazing elders, !Amace and his wife Beha travelled into the unfamiliar western world with him for a journey thy would surely not forget. They carried with them, among other authentic artefacts, exquisite jewellery made from ostrich eggshell beads, a tradition that has been passed down through countless generations.
Their mission, alongside sharing teachings and traditions with the western youth, was to share this collection of their finest hand-carved beads, each one a testament to their heritage.
The process of making these beads is meticulous and reverent. It begins with the collection of ostrich eggshell fragments from the arid desert. Each piece is carefully cleaned, cut, and polished into uniform beads. As the beads take shape, sometimes also coloured by frying them, they are threaded onto sinew or string, transforming into stunning necklaces that bear the
essence and symbology of their culture.
I first encountered Q7 years ago and we have since cultivated a deep familial connection. When I heard he was travelling with !Amace and Beha, I had to meet them. I journey quite a distance to catch them at their pitstop and was filled with warmth to be reunited with Q7 and to be
introduced to these beloved elders.
When they humbly brought the jewellery out to show it to me I was blown away. I couldnt imagine the hours that went in to the creation of each one. They also had a unique smell that evoked a sense of deep remembrance and nostalgia. When I tried on one of the necklaces it carried a
weight I cannot quite describe. It felt like home.
Each one of us is connected to this ancient lineage, the origin of humankind. Each piece was unique, telling a story of resilience, survival, and a deep connection to the land.

Artefacts of Our Collective Heritage
Ostrich eggshell beads are among the oldest forms of jewellery, dating back tens of thousands of
years. They symbolize not only beauty but also the profound connection the Bushman have with their ancestors and the Earth. Moved by this heritage, I expressed my admiration and desire to help honor and share their work.
With great respect and mutual understanding, Q7, !Amace and Beha entrusted me with a collection of their hand-carved ostrich eggshell bead necklaces, each one a piece of the desert brought to life.
Returning home, I carried with me not just the necklaces but the spirit of the Bushman, their
connection to the Earth, and the timeless artistry of their craft.
These necklaces are now a bridge between worlds, a testament to the enduring beauty of one of humanity's oldest cultures. I feel privileged to share these treasures, each one a symbol of the resilience, creativity, and profound heritage of the Bushman of the Kalahari.
All proceeds from this collection will go directly towards the IYX initiative.
Due to the very special and precious nature of this collection, it will only be shared in person by appointment.
